Elizabeth Ann Lucas (née Antal; 5 April 1909 – 13 December 2020) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.
Biography[]
Lucas was born as Elizabeth Ann Antal in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania to Martin Antal and Agnes Golema. Agnes lived to the age of 102. Her parents were Polish immigrants who emigrated to the USA in 1902. Her father was a coal miner from Poland. Her mother left her home in Krakow to join him, arriving on Ellis Island on 23 January 1902. She was the third of 11 children, and the second child born to Agnes.
Lucas had a happy memory of standing on her front porch with her brothers and sisters, waving small American flags on the Fourth of July. They couldn't afford to take trips together and walked miles to get bread and milk When Lucas was 13, she and other Mon Valley girls would get a ride on Mondays to Pittsburgh to “clean for rich people” all week. (Her schooling ended in sixth grade). On the weekends, she would ride the trolley home to Elizabeth Township and give all of her pay to her mother.
On 12 February 1936, she married Walter Lucas and lived in Belle Vernon. They had three children: Walter, Dorothy, and Robert (Robert is the only one living as of 2019). Walter died in 1997. They were married for 60 years.
At the time of her 107th birthday in 2016, Lucas had four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and had lived in New Hope Assisted Living in Avalon since 2005. She enjoys sweets, TV, bingo, exercises, Red Hat Club, playing cards, ice cream socials, coloring and mind games. She also liked to socialize and uses a walker to get around. Lucas turned 110 in April 2019.
Lucas died from complications caused by COVID-19 in Steubenville, Ohio, USA on 13 December 2020 at the age of 111 years, 252 days.
