Biography
Rentel was born in the Russian Empire, in a part which is now Lithuania, on 19 May 1852. She is believed to have been the oldest person in Europe at the time of her death in North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany on 19 September 1962 at age 110 years, 123 days. Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group in 2009. She is one of the few validated supercentenarians who were born in the territory of present-day Lithuania.[1]
After her validation, she was considered to have been the oldest living person in the world in 1962; however, subsequent research has revealed that Ella Ille Rentel was one year younger than Mary Kelly who outlived her by more than two years.[2]
