Ella May Stumpe (née Leonard; 12 July 1895 – 16 August 2005) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Ella Stumpe was born in Dunseith, North Dakota, USA on 12 July 1895. Her parents were Micajah Warren Leonard and Mary (née Bigham) Leonard. She was educated in her native North Dakota, where she graduated from school and received her teaching certificate. She worked as an elementary teacher for several years, and then worked in the County Supervisors Office. Following her first marriage, she and her husband owned and operated a drug store in Indiana. Later, she and her second husband moved to Chicago, Illinois, and were very active in church and civic activities. After his death, she managed the executive tea room of Benjamin Moore Paint Company and opened her home to boarding college students.
After her marriage to Walter Stumpe, they resided in the Chicago area and retired to Mountain Home, Ark. She later moved as one of the early residents of Leisure World in Silver Spring, and then to Frederick, where she resided with the family. Since 1996, she had resided at the Record Street Home for Ladies.
She was always very active in church and mission work, and was most recently a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick. In her later years, she at that time well into her 90's, took college classes in computers and technology and published her first book, "100 Years, My Story" and later finished her second book, which was titled "Ladies of Record Street." She also enjoyed communicating and e-mailing with friends and family, and was an avid Bridge player. She had five children.
Ella Stumpe died in Frederick, Maryland, USA on 16 August 2005 at the age of 110 years, 35 days. She is survived by two children, 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.
