Ellen Delaney (née Gahagan; 7 February 1874 - 6 May 1984) was a Canadian supercentenarian whose age was validated by LongeviQuest and Gerontology Research Group. At the time of her death she was the oldest known living person in Canada.
Biography[]
Ellen Delaney was born in the community of Dundas in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on 7 February 1874. She was the first of 10 children born to parents Thomas Gahagan (1842–1936) and Catharine Delaney (1850–1937). Her grandparents were all Irish immigrants.
Delaney was married twice. Her first husband was George Price, with whom she had a daughter named Rita. Her second marriage occurred at the age of 51, when she received special permission to marry her first cousin, William Delaney. She was a lifelong member of St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church.
As of her 100th birthday in 1974, it was reported that her hearing had declined, but her eyesight remained sharp, and she remained lucid. After the passing of her only child in 1977 at the age of 68, she relocated to the Blackadar Nursing Home in Dundas. Her sister Agnes Butler passed away on 9 January 1979, at the age of 101.
Delaney turned 110 on 7 February 1984 becoming a supercentenarian.
Delaney passed away in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on 6 May 1984, at the age of 110 years, 89 days.
