Biography[]

Early Life[]

Calvert was born on 30 August 1893 in Woodbury, Devon, England. She had five brothers and two sisters. At the age of ten, she and her family moved to the nearby city of Exeter. She left school at the age of 14 to learn a trade as a dressmaker.

After leaving home at the age of 18, Calvert moved to Bromley, Kent and worked as a nursemaid looking after two baby boys for a doctor. She then worked in a baker's shop in Luton, Bedfordshire, before returning to Exeter in around 1930 to care for her mother. Soon afterwards, she met her husband, Irishman Stanley Calvert, and they married in 1938. The pair then moved to Northern Ireland.

Later Life[]

After her husband's death in the 1960s, Calvert moved to Honiton, Devon, where she lived with two nieces. She subsequently moved to a care home in Honiton, where she lived for the last nine years of her life. She died on 13 January 2005 at the age of 111 years, 136 days.

Calvert became the oldest living person in England following the death of Constance Shepherd on 19 June 2004. However, she was not the oldest living person in the whole of the United Kingdom, as Lucy d'Abreu of Scotland was 15 months older and outlived her by 11 months. Following Calvert's death, Mary Ann Hebden became England's oldest living person.
