Dr. Endel Uiga (3 March 1918 - 21 June 2024) was an Estonian-born American centenarian who was the oldest known living Estonian-born man, a title he shared jointly with Erdman Blank (who lives in Tartu County, Estonia).

Biography[]

Endel Uiga was born in Tallinn, Harju County, Estonia on 3 March 1918. His parents were Josep Uiga (1881–1954) and Adele Uiga (née Sabba; 1889–1972). He had one brother: Hans Uiga (1920–1921). He graduated from Tallinn Technical University in the late 1930s.

He was forced to leave Estonia when the Russians broke through during World War II. He fled with his wife, Elise, and daughter to Germany, and he and his wife had two sons.

Uiga began work on this doctorate at the University of Stuttgart. He worked on his doctoral thesis in Eningen, and he and his wife had two sons.

He moved to the United States in 1949. He settled in Saratoga, New York, where he took a job as a greenhouse helper to support his growing family. He and Elise had twin daughters.

He worked for 18 years at Ballantine Laboratories in Rockaway. He began working at County College of Morris in September 1982 as an associate professor in the Electronic Engineering Technology department.

In 1970s, Uiga began working as photographer. He retired in 1988, but began work on a college-level textbook on an emerging technology named Optoelectronics.

His wife Elise died in 2010, after 68 years of marriage.

In 2010, his photo art album "Mindscapes" was published with a longer introduction to the author. In 2020, he published his biography "Where The Light Comes From. One hundred years looking back".

Following the death of 106-year-old Hugo-Eduard Vaino on 9 March 2022, he became the oldest known living Estonian-born man, a title he shared jointly with Erdman Blank of Tartu County, Estonia.

Uiga died at House of the Good Shepherd retirement community, in Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA on 21 June 2024 at the age of 106 years, 110 days.
