Etelvina Rogelia de Leon de Leon [Spanish: León de León] (16 September 1900 – 13 February 2009) was a Guatemalan centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Guatemala at the time of her death.

Biography[]

Etelvina Rogelia de Leon was born in Olintepeque, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala on 16 September 1900, the youngest of 11 children of Apolinario de Leon and Margarita de Leon. She graduated as a teacher of primary level in Quetzaltenango.

In 1921, she married Ildefonso Cifuentes, widower and father of Margaret, daughter of his first marriage. The couple had five children (including Juan Abimael Cifuentes de Leon and Elvia Animia Cifuentes de Leon). Her husband died of cardiac arrest in 1958.

She taught for 27 years in the villages San Antonio, La Cumbre, and Justo Rufino Barrios, where she served until her retirement in 1948.

In 2000, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, she received by the Progressive Cultural Association Olintepequense, a distinguished recognition as a teacher. The Olintepeque Youth Association in 2008 also recognized her efforts as a teacher over 27 years of career, which resulted in the education of dozens of children in four villages in the municipality.

Rogelia de Leon died after suffered a heart attack in Olintepeque, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala on 13 February 2009 at the age of 108 years, 150 days. At the time of her death, she had 21 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
