Ethel Jane Low Lees (née Milne; 23 May 1912 – 24 April 2020) was a British centenarian who was one of the oldest victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Ethel Lees was born in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland on 23 May 1912. She had seven sisters and four brothers. She was raised in a small flat in Dundee, before moving to nearby Roseangle House. At the age of 23, she married John Lees and the couple had three children: Brian, Jack, and Muriel. In 1963, Lees and her husband emigrated with son Brian to Toronto, Canada, to live near Muriel, and they were joined by son Jack a few years later.
Later Life and Death[]
After her husband died at the age of 55, Lees stayed in Canada with her daughter until 2013, when Muriel died following a lengthy illness. Lees moved to a care home in Broughty Ferry, Dundee in February 2018. Lees' sister, Ruby Moir, celebrated her 100th birthday in July 2019.
Lees died from COVID-19 on 24 April 2020 at the age of 107 years, 337 days, making her one of the oldest known victims of the coronavirus pandemic. At the time of her death, she had six grandchildren.
