Eugenia Vranti [Greek: Ευγενία Βράντη] (née: Hatzidaniel; 26 February 1906 – 22 August 2017) was a Greek supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Eugenia Vranti was born as Eugenia Hatzidaniel in Mytilene, North Aegean Region, Ottoman Empire (now Greece), on 13 February 1906 (now 26 February since the adoption of the Gregorian calendar). Her father, Ioannis Hatzidaniel (1850–1912), was a painter and photographer. She was the youngest of the eight children. She grew up in the bookshop of her family and the books were an integral part of her life. She wanted to study architecture at the Polytechnic. At some point, she married Evangelos Vranti, director of the Commercial Bank, and had two children, Nena, who died at the age of 80, and Tzia. One of her granddaughters died of cancer at the age of 16.
Even as a centenarian, she was able to read the books, but last 10 years of her life she was unable to read due to poor sight. At the age of 107, she had fallen and had her hip broken.
On 10 September 2013, following the death of 107-year-old Lambis Kounoupas, she became the oldest known living person in Greece.
Eugenia Vranti died in Mytilene, North Aegean Region, Greece, on 22 August 2017, at the age of 111 years, 177 days. Following her death, then 107-year-old Haido Katsara became the oldest known living person in Greece.
