Eugenie Henriette Proux (née Michaud; 4 September 1862 – 7 March 1970) was a French centenarian who was the oldest known living person in France at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Eugenie Proux was born as Eugenie Michaud in Tasdon neighbourhood, La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France on 4 September 1862. She witnessed the Franco-Prussian War, and said she offered sugared almonds to French soldiers enlisted to fight against the Prussians.
She married Louis Jean Alexandre Proux, and was later widowed.
Following the death of 107-year-old Eugenie Marchand on 16 January 1970, Proux became the oldest known living person in France. Interviewed by the newspaper Sud-Ouest about her age, she said: "It's ridiculous to have this age." At the time, although she was suffering of a cold, she was reported to be chatty and to have a good memory. She was still keeping up to date with what happened around her.
Eugenie Proux died in Saint-Louis hospital, situated in La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France on 7 March 1970, at the age of 107 years, 184 days. Following her death, then-107-year-old Emilie Coqueran became the oldest known living person in France.
