Biography
Fernande De Raeve was born on 3 December 1906 in Ledeberg, Ghent, East Flanders. Fernande was eight when the First World War began. Her father was thirty-eight when he died. Her mother had to work hard to survive, and Fernande had to work as a maid. As an orphan of war, she went to a boarding school, where she learned to speak French.
In 1930, she married Emilius Everaert in Destelbergen. The couple had two children. Emilius died in 1995 at Saint Amand Hospital. In 2000, she moved with her daughter to Dordogne, France. In 2002, Fernande was almost blind, and moved to Heiveld, Gelderland. Fernande has two children, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
In a 2016 article about her 110th birthday, it was mentioned that De Raeve has became blind since a couple of years and she was almost fully deaf. This made wachting television or reading a book impossible for her and she even never saw all five of her great-great-grandchildren. Although her days were taking a long time to end, she still enjoyed drinking wine and eating chocolate.
De Raeve died on 6 December 2017 in Sint-Amandsberg, East Flanders, Belgium at the age of 111 years, 3 days after a brief illness. Following her death, 110-year-old Madeleine Dulier became the oldest living person in Belgium.
