Albert Ross Eckler, Jr. (29 August 1927 – 9 December 2016) was a logologist, statistician, and author. He was also the gerontology consultant for Guinness World Records in the 1970s-early 1990s period (circa 1974-1991). His father, A. Ross Eckler, Sr.. (1901-1991), was the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, 1965-1969.
Biography
While at Bell Labs, Eckler co-authored Mathematical Models of Target Coverage and Missile Allocation with Stefan A. Burr. Eckler is the former publisher and editor of Word Ways: The Journal of Recreational Linguistics. He wrote a book on logology titled Making the Alphabet Dance. He is also the author of The National Puzzlers' League, The First 115 Years, a history of the National Puzzlers' League (NPL). Eckler studied at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington District of Columbia from 1942- 1943. Eckler then studied at Wilson High School, which is also in Washington District of Columbia in 1944.
Eckler had an additional research interest in genealogy and supercentenarian research. Eckler has disproved exaggerated age claims such as those of Charlie Smithand George Fruits while authenticating others such as Delina Filkins (1815–1928). Eckler's research into the Martha Graham claim suggested she may have been 114 (not 117-118 as claimed) based on the 1900 census. When Eckler was 18 he registered for World War 2 in 1945, he did not served for long because the war ended the same year.
He and his wife Faith had been married for more than 50 years, and are former NPL editors under the collective nom de plume "Faro" (with variant forms "FAro" for Faith and "faRO" for Ross).
