Lucy Mirigian (née Sarkisian; 15 August 1906 – 12 February 2021) was an Armenian-born American supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of California at the time of her death. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography
Lucy Mirigian was born as Lusig Sarkisian in Erzurum, Western Armenia, Ottoman Empire (now occupied by present-day Turkey) on 15 August 1906. Her parents were Kevork (George) and Altoun (Mary) Sarkisian.
The family left the Ottoman Empire just before the Armenian Genocide and moved to the United States. Since then, Mirigian lived in California for the rest of her life until her death in 2021.
She married Ashod Mirigian in 1936 in San Francisco, with whom she had two children: Sonia Lou Mirigian (born 5 January 1940), and Garo Alan Mirigian (born 18 January 1946). The couple later divorced in March 1976.
Following the death of Minnie Whicker on 22 October 2020, she became the oldest living person in the state of California.
Lucy Mirigian died in Fresno, California, USA on 12 February 2021 at the age of 114 years, 181 days. At the time she was the second-oldest living person in the United States, behind Hester Ford; the fourth-oldest validated living person from the Americas, behind Francisca Celsa dos Santos, Antonia da Santa Cruz, and Hester Ford; and the eighth-oldest validated living person in the world, behind Kane Tanaka, Lucile Randon, Francisca Celsa dos Santos, Jeanne Bot, Antonia da Santa Cruz, Hester Ford, and Tekla Juniewicz. She is currently the only validated Armenian-born supercentenarian.
