Biography[]
Maurice Butty was born in Ursy, Fribourg, Switzerland on 21 October 1912. He was the ninth-born of 12 children. His father was a farmer, and relocated his family to the French commune of Verges in Jura, France.
Following in his father's footsteps, Butty began working as a farmer himself, where he would live in Briod, France. Upon retiring, he bought a home in Verges, where he lived with his sister until her death in 1994. He maintained his complete independence into his centenarian years, where he would often be seen going on walks and tending to his garden.
Somewhat of a local celebrity among the townspeople in Verges due to his old age, a common anecdote about him involves an incident where Butty - at the age of 98 - was mistakenly locked out of his home. In order to get back inside, he was forced to stack a ladder on top of a wheelbarrow in order to climb through the second floor window to get back inside.
At the time of his 110th birthday in 2022, Butty still lived on his own in the same home he has resided in for decades, receiving visits from caretakers and his nephew throughout the week for help in a few everyday tasks. Despite being unable to walk for nearly a decade, he is still strong enough to power his wheelchair, and is capable of doing most things on his own, such as getting himself in and out of bed. When weather permits, he enjoys going outside on his own and visiting relatives in the neighborhood, such as his nephew, who lives next door to him. He lives with a cat named Biquette. His sight has began to fade in recent years and his hearing is poor, but remains in good health otherwise. He only takes medication for joint pain caused by arthritis.
On 1 October 2022, Butty became the oldest known Swiss-born man ever, surpassing the record of Pierre Gremion (109 years, 345 days).
In October 2022, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming the first Swiss-born man on record to become a supercentenarian.
Maurice Butty died in Verges, Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France on 29 December 2022 at the age of 110 years, 69 days. At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest known living man in France, behind Andre Ludwig.
