Paul Lamaute (26 March 1914 – 6 October 2022) was a Haitian-Canadian centenarian who was the oldest known living man and person born in Haiti at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Paul Lamaute was born in Bois Verna, Port-au-Prince, Haiti on 26 March 1914 into a wealthy family. When born, Lamaute was in poor health, it was for this reason that his family had to move to Petion-Ville.
At the age of 13, Lamaute started playing soccer, but also running, wrestling and fencing. In 1938, he founded his first soccer club.
He married with a Parisian woman from Delatour family. The couple had at least three children. His oldest son was a journalist who died in his 30's.
He worked as a journalist, a writer, an inspector for an electricity company, a professor of social sciences, and finally a soccer coach. He joined the Haitian Star second division team in the early 1960s before being subsequently promoted to the first division team. Three of his sons also played for the first division league in Haiti.
He lived in France and Germany, before moved to Quebec, Canada in December 1978 at the age of 65, to join his wife and children who had fled the Tonton Macoute. He continued after 80 years, to sing in the choir of the Sainte-Colette church in Montreal-North and to frequent the soccer fields.
In 2008, a tournament for soccer players was even named after him in Saint-Hyacinthe. He retired at the age of 97 due to onset of blindness. In November 2019 at the age of 105, Lamaute was honored by the National Assembly of Quebec.
In April 2020, it was reported that around 15 residents of his home had tested positive for COVID-19, although it is not clear whether Lamaute was one of those or not.
In early 2021, he received his COVID-19 vaccine.
In March 2021, he celebrated his 107th birthday only with his daughter due to the coronavirus pandemic, but talked to his family through Zoom.
At the age of 108, he was bedridden, practically blind, and unable to walk.
He became the oldest known living man born in Haiti, following the death of 108-year-old Luc Viel on 8 May 2021.
Lamaute died at "Centre d'hebergement Paul-Lizotte" in Montreal-Nord borough, Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 6 October 2022 at the age of 108 years, 194 days.
