Rafael Maria Mendez Duran [Spanish: Méndez Durán] (9 July 1912 – 28 May 2022) was a Costa Rican centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Costa Rica at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Rafael Mendez Duran was born in San Ramon, Alajuela, Costa Rica on 9 July 1912. His parents were Jose Benjamin Mendez Gonzalez (1871–1971) and Antonia Ninfa Duran Vega (1873–1920). He had at least eight siblings. He had 22 children. He actively participated in the Costa Rican Civil War.

He lived in the community of San Juan de Dios de Baru de Perez Zeledon for many years. Later, he lived with a daughter in Buenos Aires Canton.

In July 2012, he celebrated his 100th birthday and became a centenarian. As of July 2019, he had eight living children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He became the oldest known living man in Costa Rica, following the death of 108-year-old Roberto de Jesus Loaiza on 23 May 2020.

Rafael Mendez Duran died in in San Ramon, Alajuela, Costa Rica on 28 May 2022 at the age of 109 years, 323 days. Following his death, then 108-year-old Rafael Alvarez Campos became the oldest known living man in Costa Rica.
