Flora Stewart (Stuart or Steward) (1750?/1756? – 17 August 1868) was an American longevity claimant and former slave.
Biography[]
Flora Stewart claimed to have been in 1750 in Londonderry, New Hampshire, USA. She was an African-American woman who was widely reported as "the oldest person in New Hampshire". According to a census record she was born in about 1756, and was 104 in 1860, and in that census it says she was born in Massachusetts. And has 2 children, Sylvonia Steward and Isaiah Steward.
Stewart was a servant to a white family who said she assisted in the birthing care of a Londonderry man who was in his 80s in the 1860s. Around 1810, it was reported that the family brought her north to Londonderry.
Stewart, who lived in Candia, New Hampshire for several years, worked as a servant for a trader named William Duncan, who was born as a slave in Londonderry to the family of a man by the name of Wilson. She took the name Wilson from her owner and lived with his family until her marriage with an African-American man named Stewart. She had two sons who also lived with Duncan. They worked on his farm for several years.
After leaving Candia around 1835, Stewart returned to Londonderry where she resided until her death. She died on 17 August 1868 at the claimed age of 117 years.
