Florilla Ames (née Perkins; 17 March 1911 – 22 October 2021) was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Florilla Perkins was born in Montpelier, Vermont, USA on 17 March 1911, one of three children born to Arthur and Ida May (Barnes) Perkins. At the age of 6 her parents purchased a parcel of land, they built a farm on the land, where Ames would spend the rest of her childhood.

During the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, all of her family fell ill with the disease, while her and her two siblings quickly recovered, her parents remained bedridden for weeks before recovering, Ames recalls a man from a nearby house staying at the farm, tending to all the animals and caring for her sick parents.

Ames married Darrell Ames, a farmer, in 1938. They met in Derby Lane, Vermont, where she worked as a teacher. When Darrell retired in 1976, they returned to Waterbury Center, Vermont, to live at her childhood home. Darrell died aged 94 in 2008, after 70 years of marriage, leaving Florilla to live on her own.

Her mother died on her 99th birthday in 1985.

Before her 110th birthday she received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccination, making her one of the oldest people to receive the vaccine.

Ames lived in her childhood home in Waterbury Center, Vermont, USA.

Ames died in Waterbury Center, Vermont, USA on 22 October 2021 at the age of 110 years, 219 days. Following her death, Bill James became the oldest known living person in Vermont until his death just two days later.
