Frantisek Hamada [Czech: František Hamada] (6 June 1914 – 22 July 2020) was a Austrian-Czech centenarian and Moravian folk music violinist. At time of his death, he was the second-oldest known living man in the Czech Republic.

Biography[]

Frantisek Hamada was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria) on 6 June 1914, the son of Frantiska Hamady and Marie Urbankove. At the age of 5, he moved to Uherske Hradiste, where his father worked at the post office.

He received his first violin at the age of 11, played in various groups after graduation and accompanied the screening of silent films with pianist Terka Rasticova in Sokolovna.

He was a classmate of Tomas Bata Jr., with whom he graduated from the Uherske Hradiste Business Academy on the same day in the mid-1930s.

After completing his military service in 1938, he became interested in folklore. He mainly studied with the primates of the Slovacko district in Uherske Hradiste, Frantisek Nemec and Jaroslav Lakosil and rehearsed with Frantisek Vyhlid. He later became the primate of the chopping board.

In 1940, he was arrested for participating in the resistance group and detained by the Gestapo for two years until the World War II ended. After the World War II, he was one of the founders of the famous Hradistan folklore ensemble.

He married Anna Grundova and the couple had one son: Jiri Leo (born 5 October 1947).

In 1981, the era of the Hudci Pondelnici Association began, which he founded together with Josef Bachan and Josef Vrzala.

He was among others the holder of the Uherske Hradiste City Prize for 2012 or the Medal of the President of the Zlin Region for his contribution to the area of ​​folk culture.

At the age of 103, he regularly took part in the rehearsals of the Huddenik Pondelniku, with which he recorded three albums.

Frantisek Hamada died in Kunovice, Uherske Hradiste District, Zlin Region, Czech Republic on 22 July 2020 at the age of 106 years, 46 days.
