Frederick Victor Butterfield (28 February 1864 – 8 March 1974) was a British supercentenarian who, at the time of his death, was the world's oldest living man whose age has been subsequently validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography
Butterfield was born in West Leeds, West Yorkshire, England on 28 February 1864. He qualified as a chemist in 1885 after training for five years. He retired from pharmacy at the age of 99, according to the 1974 Guinness Book of Records. However he continued to own his pharmacy until 1970, when his son died. An electroencephalogram was performed on Butterfield before his death. The doctors concluded that his brain activity was comparable to a healthy person aged 70–75. He died in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England on 8 March 1974, eight days after his 110th birthday[1]
Longevity Records
British and European Records
Butterfield became the oldest living man in the United Kingdom following the death of John Leng in 1969. Following Butterfield's death, James Harrow became the UK's oldest living man.
Butterfield became the oldest living person in both the UK and Europe following the death of Alice Stevenson on 18 August 1973. Following his death, Rose Heeley became the oldest living person in both the UK and Europe.
At the time of his death, Butterfield was the second-oldest British man ever (after John Mosley Turner) as well as the seventh-oldest British person overall.
World Records
Butterfield became the oldest validated living man in the world following the death of Friedrich Wedeking of West Germany on 5 May 1973. However, this title may be retroactively retracted as Isaac Edwards, whose age is pending validation by the GRG, claimed to have been nearly three months older.
Following Butterfield's death, Frenchman Jean Teillet became the world's oldest living man.
