Georg Breidfjord(ur) Olafsson [Icelandic: Georg Breiðfjörð Ólafsson] (26 March 1909 – 22 February 2017) was an Icelandic centenarian who was the oldest man to ever live in Iceland and also the first man from Iceland to live to the age of both 106,[1] and 107.[2]
Biography[]
Georg Breidfjord(ur) Olafsson was born in Dalasysla [Icelandic: Dalasýsla], Vesturland, Iceland on 26 March 1909, to parents Olafur Sturlaugsson (Died on 25 October 1958) and Agusta Sigurdardottir (Died on 9 January 1972).[3][4] Olafsson married Thorbjorg Juliusdottir, and the couple had three sons. His wife died in 1994.
In March 2009, he celebrated his 100th birthday. Four years later, on 18 May 2013, following the death of 104-year-old Gissur Olafur Erlingsson (five days his senior), he became the oldest known living man in Iceland.
Olafsson became the oldest known man ever recorded from Iceland on 7 March 2015, at the age of 105 years, 346 days, when he broke the record of Helgi Simonarson (1895–2001). At the time, he lived in a home for the elderly in Stykkisholmur [Icelandic: Stykkishólmur], Vesturland, where his 100-year-old brother Eyjolfur also resided.[5]
On 26 March 2015, he became the first (and so far the only) Icelandic male to reach the age of 106.
He became the oldest known living person in Iceland, following the death of 109-year-old Gudridur Gudbrandsdottir on 25 June 2015.
When interviewed in January 2016, he claimed that he did not have the faintest clue about the secret to his longevity.[6]
On 26 March 2016, he became the first (and so far the only) Icelandic male to reach the age of 107.
Georg Olafsson died in Stykkisholmur, Iceland on 22 February 2017, at the age of 107 years, 333 days.[7]
