Francis George John Pollard (17 December 1914 – 20 April 2021) was a British centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Scotland at the time of his death.
Biography[]
George Pollard was born in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland, UK on 17 December 1914, the eldest of three children. He was raised in the port with his brother Harry and sister Alma. After school, he started work at the town’s Royal Naval Torpedo factory before being moved by the company to their factory in Alexandria.
He married Peggy, and had two children: Ida Commons and Edward Pollard. The family set up home in Balloch in 1954, where they would stay until the death of Peggy in 1998 at the age of 82. After of death of his wife, he moved to East Kilbride to live with his daughter Ida.
He learned to swim at age 85. He was cycling until he was 95. At the age of 105, he suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
By his 105th birthday in 2019, he had four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pollard became the oldest known living man in Scotland following the death of 106 year-old Walter Sharp on 19 August 2020.
Pollard died in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK on 20 April 2021 at the age of 106 years, 124 days. After his death, 106-year-old David Crawford became the oldest living man in Scotland.
