Georgia "Georgie" Ella Jordan (née Gray 18 September 1880 – 9 February 1995) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the oldest living person in the USA at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Georgia Ella Jordan was born in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia, USA on 18 September 1880 to parents Lorenzo Gray and Cora Pierce Gray. She had at least five siblings.
In September 1898, at the age of 18, she married William Jordan. They went on to have one child together - a daughter named Ruby, who lived to be 96 years. In 1907 or 1908 they moved to Newport News, Virginia, USA where she continued to live for the rest of her life. Her husband William died on 28 August 1946, leaving Georgia a widow, after which she did not remarry.
In September 1980, Georgie celebrated her 100th birthday, becoming a centenarian. In September 1990 she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian. From her 100th birthday until her death she was popular in the press and thought to be the oldest living person in Virginia.
She reportedly spent the last fourteen years of her life as blind. She had spent decades living with her daughter, but at the age of 110 she had to move to a nursing home in Newport News where she spent the rest of her life.
She became the oldest known living person in the United States, following the death of 114-year-old Wilhelmina Kott on 6 September 1994.
Georgia Ella Jordan died in Newport News, Virginia, USA on 9 February 1995 at the age of 114 years, 144 days. Following her death, then 114-year-old Sarah Knauss became the oldest living person in the United States.
Her age of was verified by SSA study, Oliver Trim, Ilias Leivaditis, Waclaw Jan Kroczek and Robert Young, and (posthumously) validated by the GRG on 14 March 2024.
