Gershom Onesimus Browne (8 August 1898 – 6 December 2000) was a Guyanese centenarian who was the last known Guyanese First World War veteran.
Biography[]
Browne was born in Bagotville, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana) on 8 August 1898. He was a descendant of Loko people.
He served in the 1st British West Indies Regiment and fought on the Western Front during the World War I. After the war, he worked as a farmer, but also was village leader and served for many years on the Village Council.
In 1999, Browne wrote a book called "The History of Bagotville".
Browne died in Bagotville, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Guyana on 6 December 2000 at the age of 102 years, 120 days. He was survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
