Gertruda Gorecka [Polish: Górecka] (12 November 1911 – 25 June 2024) was a Polish-Canadian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She held the title of oldest known living person in Canada from the death of 112-year-old Helen Doan on 18 April 2024 until her own death two months later.

Biography[]

Gertruda Gorecka was born on 12 November 1911 in Kiebel, Province of Posen, German Empire, which is now Keblowo, Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland. In 2004, she moved from Szczecin to Windsor, Canada at the invitation of her only daughter Halina Rozalska.

Her passion in life was sewing beautiful costumes for the theatre. She is always happy and never complains about other people or about hard times like during communism. She was taken care of by her daughter and grandson Bartlomiej.

At the time of her 105th birthday in 2016, she was still cheerful and had been playing harmonica for years, for example in 2013 during her 102nd birthday celebrations when she made her guests happy by playing beautiful patriotic melodies.

Gorecka survived cancer at the age of 77 and at 94 she underwent surgery for gallstones. At the age of 112, she has declined due to dementia, and although she is wheelchair-bound and no longer able to speak, her family says she still remains strong.

Gorecka died on 25 June 2024 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada at the age of 112 years, 226 days. She was the oldest known living person in the province of Ontario, and was also the oldest known living Polish-born person.
