Giannis Papadimitriou (29 March 1912 – 25 December 2019) was a Greek trade unionist, lawyer and politician, who was a member of the United Democratic Left (EDA). He was the oldest living former Greek parliamentarian at his death. At the time of his death, he was also the oldest known living man in Greece.

Biography[]

Papadimitriou was born on 29 March 1912 in Ypsilo Chorio, Phocis, Greece. He became at a young age member of the Communist Party of Greece. He studied law and was employed as an employee of the Hellenic Electric Railways (HRC) in 1936 where from 1941 to 1947 he was president of the workers' union when he was fired and sentenced to death by a military court. Following a retrial, he was released in 1954. He then practiced law.

He was elected for the first time MP in the constituency of Kavala with the Democratic Union in the elections of 1956 and then with the United Democratic Left (EDA) in the elections of 1958, 1961, 1963 and 1964 in Piraeus B election constituency. As an MP, he highlighted problems related to the solution of labor problems and the successive insurance of employees.

During the dictatorship of the colonels he was persecuted again and displaced to islands such as Gyaros, Leros and Samothrace until 1971. After the "Μetapolitefsi" (regime change and return to democracy), he was reinstated in the ISAP (Athens–Piraeus Electric Railways), from where he retired in 1987.

For his fights, Giannis Papadimitriou was honored with a medal by the Ministry of National Defense. He became the oldest known living man in Greece, following the death of 108-year-old Manolis Peponis on 4 April 2019.

Papadimitriou died on 25 December 2019 at the age of 107 years, 271 days. Following his death, then 107-year-old Stelios Fragiadoulakis became the oldest known living man in Greece.
