Gina Galvani (née Ravazzola; 16 December 1907 – 27 January 2019) was an Italian-born American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2020.
Biography[]
Gina Galvani was born as Gina Ravazzola in Castell'Arquato, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on 16 December 1907. Her parents were farmers. She married her neighbour, John Galvani, in 1927 and the couple moved to Framingham, Massachusetts, in 1930. The couple had a daughter, Ave Maria, shortly before they left Italy. Their son, Carlo, was born in Framingham.
Galvani worked as a seamstress in an apron factory. She never smoked nor drank, and was a regular at her local church. Her husband John died in 1978 after 51 years of marriage. Galvani has survived breast cancer, underwent a major gall bladder operation aged around 90, and also had a pacemaker installed as a nonagenarian.
As of 2018, Galvani had eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She lived in her own home until March 2018, when she moved into a nursing home after the death of her daughter, who was her main caregiver.
Galvani lived in Framingham, Massachusetts. She became the oldest living Italian emigrant in the United States, following the death of Catena Cavallaro on 13 October 2018.
Gina Galvani died in Framingham, Massachusetts, USA, on 27 January 2019 at the age of 111 years, 42 days.
