Giovanni Battista Buffo (9 December 1867 – 14 August 1978) was an Italian-American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Giovanni Battista Buffo was born in Forno Canavese, Citta Metropolitana di Torino, Piemonte, Italy on 9 December 1867. He married Giovannina Milano in Forno di Rivara (today Forno Canavase) on January 20, 1894. He later emigrated to Illinois, United States with his family in 1898. He began his career in mining once he arrived in America. He worked in the coal mines in the area of Spring Valley, Bureau Co, Illinois and later in the copper mines of Morenci, Graham Co. and Ajo, Pima Co, Arizona. City Directories and US Census records indicate that between 1930 and 1948 the family moved back and forth between Morenci, Arizona and the San Francisco, California area. He had five children.

Giovanni Battista Buffo died in San Mateo County, California, United States on 14 August 1978 aged 110 years, 248 days. At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest living man in the world, behind Charlie Nelson and the oldest Italian-born man ever. Nelson died exactly one week after Buffo.
