Biography
Giuseppa Campagna was born in Ciminna, Sicily, Italy, on 1 January 1903. Her parents were Michele and Aversa Maria Campagna. At the age of 16, in 1919, she emigrated to the United States and worked as a dressmaker for Broadway theatres. She married a man with the surname Rizzo and had four children with him.
Campagna never returned to her hometown, but would write letters to her nieces and nephews periodically even as a centenarian. Despite them being octogenarians as of 2014, they’d kept all of their aunt’s letters.
Giuseppa Campagna passed away in New York City, New York, USA, on 15 September 2014, at the age of 111 years, 257 days. She had been the oldest Sicilian-born person since the death of Arturo Licata on 24 April 2014.
