Gladys Ivy Hawley (née Staten; 18 December 1891 – 28 April 2004) was a British supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in the United Kingdom at the time of her death. Her age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography
Hawley was born on 18 December 1891 in Walsingham, Norfolk, England. She married Alfred Hawley in 1927, though the couple had no children. She worked as a nurse and lived in Ashgate, Derbyshire.
In her later life, Hawley lived in a care home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. She was able to walk around with a frame until a few years before her death. When asked for the secret of her longevity, she replied "good, clean living". She died on 28 April 2004 at the age of 112 years, 132 days.
Hawley became the oldest living person in the United Kingdom following the death of 112 year-old Nellie Bradley on 11 March 2002. She also became the last surviving British person born before 1892. Following Hawley's death on 28 April 2004, Lucy d'Abreu became the UK's oldest living person.
