Gladys M. Phillips (née Cassell; 14 November 1912 – 5 February 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by LongeviQuest (LQ) and the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.

Biography[]

Gladys Phillips was born as Gladys M. Cassell in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA on 14 November 1912 to Lawrence and Julia Cassell. She attended Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, a sorority for African-American women.

Phillips worked as a teacher in Cleveland, Ohio, and was an avid churchgoer known for being active in her community. In August 1952, at the age of 39, she married Alvin Phillips; their marriage lasted for 50 years until Alvin's death in 2002. The couple had no children, but they had many nieces and nephews.

In November 2022, Phillips celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Gladys Phillips died in Richmond Heights, Ohio, USA on 5 February 2023 at the age of 110 years, 83 days. Her funeral was held five days later. She was survived by her brother-in-law Dr. James L. Phillips and his wife Barbara, as well as their descendants. At the time of her death, she was the third-oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Ohio, after Alma Kahl and Ruby Lockhart.
