Glynis Margaret Payne Johns (5 October 1923 – 4 January 2024) was a South African-British-American centenarian, and the actor of Jane and Michael Banks mother in the classic movie Mary Poppins, and was a star in many more classic movies.
Biography[]
Glynis Johns was born on 5 October 1923 in Pretoria, South Africa to Mervyn Johns (1899–1992) and Alyce Steele (?–1971), and no siblings. Glynis was born with a very theatrical family. Glynis' middle names were "Margaret" and "Payne" named after her grandmothers Margaret Anne Samuel and Elizabeth Steele-Payne. Glynis and her family returned to England only a couple of months after Glynis was born. At the age of five, Glynis joined the London Ballet School, at age six, she was hailed in Britain as a very good dancer, at ten, she was incredibly working as a Ballet instructor, and at age eleven, she earned a degree to teach. Hoping to study with the Sadler's Wells Ballet at twelve, she went instead to Clifton High School in Bristol, studying with the two hours a day she was educated at the Cone School of Dancing. As a dance student, Johns was awarded some 25 gold medals. beside from her Clifton education, she also attended South Hampstead High School in London, England, where she was a contemporary of Dame Angela Lansbury. In 1942, Glynis married Anthony Forwood (1915–1988), in 1945 they had Gareth Forwood (1945–2007), Glynis and Anthony divorced in 1948. In 1952, Glynis married Davis Foster (1920–2010) they had no children, Glynis moved to California in the 1970s. Glynis was married 2 more times, her final marriage to Elliott Arnold (1912–1980) in 1964, Elliott died in 1980 which is when they divorced. Glynis was in more than 60 films and 30 plays, she was a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Glynis died of natural causes in Los Angeles, California, USA at the age of 100 years, and 91 days.
