Gurley Moett Mitchell (30 September 1913 – 2 November 2022) was an American centenarian who was one of the oldest known living people in the U.S. state of Texas at the time of her death.

Early Life[]

Mitchell was born on 30 September 1913 in Ben Wheeler, Texas. She worked for the Southwestern Bell, a subsidiary of AT&T, with her friends Ina Chaffin, Ruby Davis, and Lois Ward for 30 years, until her retirement. She also worked as a seamstress.

She was married to J. T. Mitchell. They were both members of the Lancaster Avenue Methodist Church, and later the Dallas Brethren Church in Oak Cliff. J. T. died after 55 years of marriage.

Later Life and Death[]

In her later years, Mitchell was a member of the Payne Springs United Methodist Church, and she sang in the church’s choir. She was known for her sense of humor and her singing voice, and was liked by everyone she met.

On her 109th birthday in 2022, Mitchell met her great-great-granddaughter Tensley. At the age of 109, she was bedridden.

Mitchell died in her sleep from natural causes on 2 November 2022 in Eustace, Texas, at the age of 109 years, 33 days. At the time of her death, she was believed to be the oldest known living person in Eustace, and possibly also the oldest known living person in Henderson County. She was survived by three children, three grandsons, four great-granddaughters, and one great-great-granddaughter.
