Centenarian |
Gwilym Robert Arthur Ellis (16 February 1911 – 9 August 2017) was a British centenarian who was the oldest known man in Wales at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Gwilym Ellis was born in Gowerton, Wales, UK on 16 February 1911, the youngest of seven children. He started work at 15 on a coal lorry, which he started to drive in 1926.
He met his future wife Gwyneth at a church hall dance in Penclawdd. In 1936, they tied-the-knot and ended up living with her parents in Hendy Road, Penclawdd. The couple had two children: Wyn, and Shirley.
He moved his family to Port Talbot when the steelworks opened there in 1951 and settled in the Sandfields area of the town. The couple went on to buy land to build their own home.
His wife died in 2003 at age 89, following a short illness. He was left devastated by her death but still remained active and had a love of bowls and even won his club tournament at the age of 93.
On his 100th birthday in 2011, a family party was held in his honour and he was awarded a number of cards including from the Queen.
Until the age of 106, he was still fit enough to go upstairs to bed under his own steam but after suffering a few falls it impacted on his mobility and it became more difficult for him.
Gwilym Ellis died in Port Talbot, Wales, UK on 9 August 2017 at the age of 106 years, 174 days. His successor as Wales's oldest man was then-105-year-old Searson Thompson. He was survived by one son Wyn; one daughter Shirley; one daughter-in-law Kathleen; son-in-law Gary; five grandchildren Claire, Kate, Eleri, Elan, and Elin; and six great-grandchildren Jake, Ben, Ethan, Olivia, Nia, and Arthur.
