Hanayo Kami (15 September 1894 – 18 January 2005) was a Japanese-born American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Kami was born in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on 15 September 1894. In 1915, at the age of 21, she arrived to Hilo, Hawaii as a Japanese picture bride to marry an independent sugar cane planter. She spent the rest of her life living in Hilo. The couple had three sons together, the oldest of which was in his mid-80s at the time of Kami's death.
Several of her relatives died in the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Her son Hideo fought in World War II, while her son Albert was enlisted just before the war ended and served in occupied Japan. Her husband died in 1987 at the age of 93. At the age of 102, she moved to the Hilo's Life Care Center.
Kami died at the Life Care Center of Hilo, Hawaii, USA, on 18 January 2005, at the age of 110 years, 125 days. She was survived by her three sons (Hideo, Albert and Ralph), six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
