Hattie Louvenia Hill (née Marsh, formerly Lewis; 1 February 1911 – 25 March 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2024. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known person living in the U.S. state of New York, after Louise Levy.
Biography[]
Hattie Hill was born as Hattie Louvenia Marsh on 1 February 1911 in Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA. She was the seventh of fourteen children born to Lawrence and Cora Marsh. She attended elementary school where she completed the eighth grade, the highest level offered to African Americans who lived in Chatham County at that time. Years later, she completed requirements for a high school diploma through the GED program.
In her early adulthood, Hill moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina. While living and working there, she met and married Robert Lewis, with whom she had one son, Robert Jr. They moved to Birmingham, Alabama, USA.
In 1945, Hill joined Convent Avenue Baptist Church in New York. After her husband's death, she married Vincent Hill, who also predeceased her. In later life, Hill lived in Harlem, New York. She died on 25 March 2023 at the age of 112 years, 52 days.
