Helen Czechowicz (née Pieslak; 1 January 1896 – 3 February 2006) was a Lithuanian-American supercentenarian notable for her longevity. Her case has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). [1]
Biography[]
Helen Czechowicz was born to a Polish family in Vilnius in what was then the Russian Empire (present-day Lithuania), on 1 January 1896. In the interwar period, the city of Wilno was the capital of Wilno Voivodeship, Poland. Since 1991, Vilnius is the capital of independent Lithuania. She became a seamstress at an early age, and also studied to become a dental technician. She moved to the USA and arrived there on Ellis Island on 8 October 1913. She and her relatives settled in Winooski, Vermont.
She married Joseph Czechowicz in 1919 and moved to Derby, Connecticut. The couple moved to New Britain and had two children: Arnold and Erika. In the 1960s, they moved to Somers, Connecticut.
Wherever she lived, Helen always had a garden. Even in her 90s, she insisted on doing all the gardening independently. As well as gardening, she enjoyed cooking and was very active all through her life.[2]
Helen Czechowicz died in Connecticut, USA, on 3 February 2006 at the age of 110 years, 33 days.
