Helen McKinnon Doan (née Donaldson; (18 September 1911 - 18 April 2024) was a Canadian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the oldest known living person in Canada from the death of 113-year-old Mabel Mah on 30 January 2024, until her own death.
Biography[]
Helen Doan was born in Temiskaming Mine, Ontario, Canada on 18 September 1911. She moved to Toronto with her family when she was 12. As a child, she enjoyed playing softball.
She married Harold Alfred Doan in 1935 and had two children, Helen and Harry. She worked as a bookkeeper and an office manager until her retirement in 1976. Her husband died after 63 years of marriage.
In September 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. She was not known about by the general public until her 112th birthday. As of 2023, she has five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
On 19 September 2022, just one day after her 111th birthday, Doan became the oldest person in the province of Ontario following the death of 111-year-old Dora Skeen.
On 19 September 2023, just one day after her 112th birthday, the Gerontology Research Group announced on the World Supercentenarian Forum that Helen Doan had been given the pending status. Her age was fully validated on 25 October 2023.
On 30 January 2024, following the death of 113-year-old Mabel Mah of British Columbia, Doan became the oldest living person in Canada.
Helen Doan died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 18 April 2024 at the age of 112 years, 213 days. She was one of two remaining Canadians born in 1911, the other being Polish-born Gertruda Gorecka, also living in Ontario, and as Gorecka was born in Poland she was the last Canadian-born person born in 1911.
