Heghnar "Helen" Kherdian Paloian (11 June 1906 – 26 October 2014) was a Armenian-American centenarian who at the time of her death, she was the oldest living Armenian-born person and oldest known survivor of the 1915 Armenian genocide.[1][2][3]

Biography

Helen Paloian was born as Helen Kherdian on 11 June 1906 in the village of Khulakugh, located in the Western Armenian province of Kharpert. Her parents, Kevork and Mariam Kherdian, died when she was a young child. Born homeless, she was orphaned at the young age and lived on the streets when the genocide occurred. She was found and placed in an orphanage before being brought to the United States by a cousin. In February 1926, she married Zadig Paloian (1899-1986).

Helen Stamelos passed away on 26 October 2014 in West Diversey, Chicago, Illinois at the age of 108 years, 135 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living Armenian-born person and oldest known survivor of the 1915 Armenian genocide.
