Eleni "Helen" Stamelos (30 November 1906 – 7 August 2017) was a Greek-Australian supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 27 January 2021. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living Greek-born person.
Biography[]
Helen Stamelos was born as Eleni Stamelos in the small village of Kymi, Evia, Greece on 30 November 1906, Helen was the tenth of 11 children, having five brothers and five sisters.
During the German occupation, she helped her husband, Dimitris, hide Italian soldiers from the wrath of the Nazis.
The couple migrated to Australia in 1968, settling in Perth, where they worked in hospitality, setting up fish and chipperies. They had four children - three sons and a daughter. Helen was fortunate to see twelve grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, who were all with her, during her time in aged care, up until the final moment of her life.
Helen Stamelos died on 7 August 2017 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia at the age of 110 years, 250 days. At the time of her death, she was the third-oldest living person in Australia (behind Marjorie Cooke and Margaret Vivian) and the second-oldest Australian immigrant (as Vivian was born in the United Kingdom).
