Helena Morton (née Gronek; 2 April 1911 – 12 April 2020) was a Polish-born American centenarian who was the oldest known victim of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Helena Morton was born in Strych-Kopenina, Russian Empire (presently in Masovia Voivodeship, Poland) on 2 April 1911. She was the daughter of Joseph and Josephine Kendi Gronek, and later migrated to the USA. She was married to John Morton. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She was an avid gardener, and loved animals and children.
In her later life, Morton lived in a nursing home in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She died from COVID-19 on 12 April 2020 at the age of 109 years, 10 days. She was the oldest known victim of the coronavirus pandemic until 112 year-old Valentina Martin Gimenez died from the disease the following day.
