Dr. Helga Doerk (née Schluet) (8 February 1908 – 2 October 2018) was an Austrian-German supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was among the top 10 oldest living people in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Biography
Helga Doerk was born Helga Schluet on 8 February 1908 in Villach, Carinthia, Austria. In 1925, she moved to Graz, Styria, Austria, and became a teacher of philosophy, German, and English. She got her doctorate in philosophy in 1933. In 1940, she married Wilhelm Doerk and gave birth to a daughter, Gundel (married Blackert), in 1948.
Helga continued teaching until 1976, when she was 68 years old. She was later widowed. At the time of her 100th birthday in 2008, along with her daughter, she had three grandchildren. Throughout her life, she has lived by the motto: “Do not take yourself too seriously, be there for others, and be grateful for what you have.” She still liked to drink cappuccinos and play the piano at the time of her 110th birthday in 2018.
Helga Doerk died in Aachen, North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, on 2 October 2018 at the age of 110 years, 236 days. At the time of her death, she was among the top 20 oldest living people in Germany.
