After a brilliant academic career (he received an award for his primary school certificate results), he was admitted to the teacher training college in Auxerre, where in 1936 he met Paulette Baudot, to whom he became engaged in 1939. The couple, both teachers, married on 22 April 1940 in Cravant. Henri was taken prisoner in June 1940 and spent five years in captivity in Czechoslovakia. He was liberated in May 1945 and from there returned to France, resuming his teaching career. Henri and Paulette had two children, Jean-Francis (born 1946), and Annette (born 1947). He worked until 1972, when he retired. During his retirement, Henri remained very active, participating in sports and other activities.
