Biography[]
Havasi was born as Henrik Hirsch on 17 September 1882 in Soltvadkert, Austria-Hungary (present-day Hungary), into a family with German ancestors. His grandfather (who was at some point the mayor of the town) lived to be 92 and his mother lived to be 98. He had five siblings in total.
Henrik grew up in a farm near Soltvadkert, and he lived his whole life in the area. He first got married in 1907. He fought on the Italian front during World War I for three years. He returned home in December 1918, and got married again the next year. Henrik and his wife brought up nine children. He worked as a farmer until his 90s. He became a widower at age 95.
In his last years, Henrik mainly lived with one of his daughters, but often stayed at other family members for weeks. In 1988, at age 105, he became the oldest living person in Hungary. Both his physical and mental health started to deteriorate at age 106, but his appetite was still great. At that time, he had 24 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He became the oldest known living person in Hungary, following the death of 107-year-old Karolyne Nemeth on 23 July 1987.
After his 107th birthday, he got pneumonia three times in a row, but was always able to recover. Henrik Havasi died in Soltvadkert, Bacs-Kiskun, Hungary on 8 November 1990 at the age of 108 years, 52 days. Following his death, then 107-year-old Sandorne Sarkozi became the oldest known living person in Hungary.
