Biography[]

Herman Ward was born in Cox Village, Saint John Figtree Parish, Nevis, Saint Kitts and Nevis, on 23 September 1908. At some point, he married Mildred ‘Olive’ Richards, with whom he had a daughter, Hyleta Liburd (who later became Deputy Governor General for Nevis). His other children were Sylvia Ward (who later became a Nurse), and Mavis Mills. He grew cotton in the 1920's at Prentice Works, an estate close to Montpelier, and was a sharecropper until the 1950's. When he gave up sharecropping, he raised crops (such as, potatoes, yams, tanias), and animals (mainly cows) at both, Cox Village, and Beach Road. He loved gardening into his old age.

On 23 September 2008, he celebrated his 100th birthday, becoming a centenarian.

On 2 June 2011, following the death of 112-year-old Florence Baker, he became the oldest known living person in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

On 20 October 2014, following the death of 107-year-old Jacob Warner of the United States Virgin Islands, he became the oldest living Kittian and Nevisian-born man and person in the world.

Herman Ward died in Morning Star, Saint John Figtree Parish, Nevis, St Kitts and Nevis, on 9 February 2015, at the age of 106 years, 139 days. Following his death, then 103-year-old Ismay Sweeney, became the oldest living person in Saint Kitts and Nevis. He is currently the oldest man ever to have died in Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the second-oldest man ever to have been born in Saint Kitts and Nevis, after Jacob Warner (1907–2014) who died in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
