Hilda Hecej [Croatian: Hilda Hećej] (née Tompak) (born 23 April 1918) is a Croatian centenarian who is currently the oldest known living person in Croatia.

Biography[]

Hilda Hećej was born as Hilda Tompak in Suhopolje, Virovitica-Podravina County, Austria-Hungary (now Croatia), on 23 April 1918. She studied archeology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. During World War II, she worked at the Museum of Slavonia while secretly collaborating with the National Liberation Movement in Croatia, and was a writer, World War II spy, and activist. At some point, she married and had two children.

In 1951, she moved to Zagreb. Although she had the opportunity to pursue a political career, she chose instead to dedicate herself to family life as a housewife. In 2024, at the age of 105, she witnessed and participated in the premiere of Renata Poljak's film "Forests of the Forest" dedicated to female partisans, with the presence of two of the film's four protagonists. The story, the discussion and the reaction of the audience led the moderator to declare the film the most emotional moment of the festival.

On 28 October 2024, following the death of 109-year-old Marija Herman, she became the oldest known living person in Croatia.

Hilda Hećej currently lives in Zagreb, Zagreb County, Croatia, at the age of 107 years, 277 days.
