Ilija Trifunovic [Serbian: Илија Трифуновић] (16 July 1907 – 9 March 2012) was a Serbian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Serbia at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Ilija Trifunovic was born in the village of Muzinac near Sokobanja, Kingdom of Serbia (now Serbia) on 16 July 1907 (claimed 1 July 1907).
He earned his pension in a hard coal mine in Rtanj. He was one of the best miners. As a digger, he worked two shifts a day. Later he was also a supervisor.
His mother lived to be 80, and his father to be 88. None of the brothers are alive anymore, he outlived them all. In 1994, Ilija's first wife Dobrila died. As luck would have it, a woman of the same name, her former tenant and co-worker in many household chores, wanted to succeed her. After divorcing her first husband and arriving from Niš with two children, Dobrila settled with Trifunović. She worked here and in other households and accumulated 26 years of pensionable service.
Ilija suggested that they get married. He said, they have known each other for a long time and he would like to leave her some property. With his second wife, whose name was also Dobrila (like the first), he officially married in July 2007, a few days before his 100th birthday, thus becoming the oldest groom in Serbia.
He became the oldest known living man in Serbia, following the death of 109-year-old Jovo Latinovic on 16 April 2011.
Ilija Trifunovic died in Sokobanja, Serbia on 9 March 2012 at the age of 104 years, 237 days. Following his death, then 102-year-old Milivoje Matejic became the oldest known living man in Serbia.
