Inez Eileen Gwendoline Newton nee Hinsley (7 November 1901 – 15 June 2009) was a British-New Zealand centenarian who was the country’s oldest known living person.
Biography[]
Inez was born in London, England, UK on 7 November 1901. She was the third of seven children. She married Leslie Newton in 1927. Inez and Leslie had two children, but their son died before he was 10.
The Newtons moved to New Zealand in 1947 because it was "the only suitable country without poisonous animals". They bought a poultry farm in Swanson, but it was turned into a tea house because Leslie was unable to kill a chicken.
After the death of Ruby Billings on 9 May 2009, Newton became New Zealand's oldest living person. She died a month later, and Doris Mackintosh became New Zealand's oldest living person.
