Biography[]

Early Life[]

Isabel Barletta was born in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina on 12 September 1911, in a house on Primera Junta Street. She later moved to a house her father and brothers built, which was previously abandoned, on Jose Marti Street. She attended elementary school in Francisco Bilbao, Buenos Aires, and later studied art history, drawing, and painting at the Fernando Fader school.

In her leisure time, Barletta especially liked attending carnivals in Flores. She would watch parades and murgas (a type of musical theater popular in Buenos Aires); wear colorful, festive clothing; and observe contests (such as "best dressed," and, after cars came to Argentina, "best car"). She also enjoyed shopping in Plaza Flores.

Barletta recalls how her neighborhood of Flores changed over time with the advancement of technology. There were no street lamps (or electricity in general) in Barletta's town; she recalls night watchmen guarding streets instead. Barletta remembers when kerosene lamps were implemented in Flores in the 1920s. There was one for every half-block, and it was the first time public streets were lit.

Cars had also not yet arrived in Argentina when Barletta was a child, so she had to walk to school. She remembers that if she walked in the rain, a school porter would remove mud from her shoes with a shovel. When the first cars drove through Barletta's town, it was quite a spectacle. She recalls Flores residents rushing to the streets to watch them, as they had never seen them before.

Later Life[]

Barletta's secret to longevity is respecting others and helping people in need. She also believes it is important to appreciate nature. She seems to have a passion for life; in 2014, at the age of 102, she was quoted as saying, "I want to be at least 110 years old."

Sure enough, in September 2021, Barletta celebrated her 110th birthday. Longevity runs in her family, as her sister Deolinda, whom she lived with as of 2018, was still alive at the age of 104.

Barletta became the oldest known (documented) living person in Argentina following the death of 115-year-old Casilda Benegas on 28 June 2022.

Isabel Barletta currently lives in Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina at the age of 113 years, 93 days.
