Isadora Byrd (née Perkins; 22 August 1908 – 24 January 2020) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.

Biography[]

Isadora Byrd was born as Isadora Perkins in Timmonsville, South Carolina, USA on 22 August 1908, the oldest of five children of Simon Perkins and Lanie (née Lyde) Perkins. She was baptized at an early age at Chaney Grove Baptist Church. She worked on a family farm for several years until she married.

She married Valentine Byrd at the age of 15. She had four children, including Sammie Lee Byrd (now deceased), Willis Byrd (now deceased), Wallace Byrd (now deceased), and Catherine Freeman (aged 86 in August 2018). Her husband died in 1989.

She had several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. On 12 June 2018, the family celebrated the birth of her great-great-great-granddaughter, Nivea Antrum, the sixth generation of the family. Byrd was not able to speak anymore due to old age.

Isadora Byrd died in Florence, South Carolina, USA on 24 January 2020 at the age of 111 years, 155 days. She was survived by one daughter Catherine Freeman; four nieces Juanita Jackson, Celeste Ellis, Ralphine Johnson, and Johnnie Mae Perkins; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-granddaughter Nivea Antrum.
